Sweden urged to build more nuclear power plants
The leader of the Moderate Coalition Party, Ulf Kristersson, and the leader of the Liberal Party, Nyamko Sabuni, believe that the legislation on nuclear energy adopted in Sweden a decade ago does not correspond to the new reality. Opposition politicians are confident that existing laws are hopelessly outdated and pose a threat to the country's long-term sustainable energy supply. For the necessary level of provision of energy to Sweden, they propose to commission more nuclear reactors of small size than is currently operating, and remove restrictions on the further introduction of a peaceful atom into the energy industry. This was reported on July 27 by the newspaper Dagens Nyheter. Recall that ten years ago, on June 17, 2010, Riksdag repealed the law in force at that time governing nuclear energy. At the same time, it was decided to adopt a new section in the Environmental Code, which, at least theoretically, allowed the government to issue permits for the construction of new reactors. However, as a result, everything was reduced to the fact that only ten reactors located in pre-designated places are allowed to operate simultaneously in Sweden. At the same time, new reactors can be built only at the three sites where nuclear power plants are already located today. For their part, Kristersson and Sabouni propose lifting these restrictions in order to enable the next generation of nuclear power. In an article published by Dagens Nyheter, they emphasize that Sweden is already one of the recognized international leaders in the green transition of the economy and energy from fossil commodities to renewable energy. But in order for this work to continue, in their opinion, the development of a peaceful atom should not be reduced to restrictions that hinder innovation and development in the field of nuclear energy.
